FIFA President Gianni Infantino has officially confirmed the dates for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.Speaking during the traditional tournament overview media conference, he confirmed that the tournament will run from November 21 to December 18, 2022, according to Sports Illustrated.
It effectively means that the tournament’s final will coincide with the Qatar National Day in 2022.
Joe Crann, a journalist who was present at the Press conference at the Luzhniki Stadium, tweeted saying the dates had been finalised.
Crann also quoted Infantino as saying that “leagues around the world have been informed already,” stressing FIFA’s strict position on this announcement by adding “of course they will have to adapt.”
FIFA remains open to expanding the number of teams by 50% in 2022, four years earlier than planned.
The organisation will continue discussing the matter with Qatar and “calmly and quietly” decide whether to grow the tournament to 48 teams from 32, Infantino said, according to The Chicago Tribune.
